About Me
While he writes from his adopted village home in south-west France, there is no doubt that singer-songwriter David Scot Brown’s work is a reflection of the rich and diverse musical influences of his hometown, Toronto Ontario, Canada.

Over the years, he has entertained audiences in Canada, the United States, the Netherlands and France, with his folk, roots, alt. country and jazz flavoured music, along the way gaining an enviable reputation for fresh and original songwriting. Brown recorded his first studio album of original songs in the spring of 2015. Following its official launch, the eight song EP titled "The Porch Light" garnered word-of-mouth sales in France, Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and as far afield as South Africa and New Zealand.

On the strength of his narrative style, he was commissioned to compose the sole English-language song for a stage production titled "Les champs de Bleuets" which premiered at the Centre Culturel Michel Manet in Bergerac, France in February, 2016. “It was interesting writing to a brief for a change” says Brown, who wrote the entire song on flights between Amsterdam and Toronto “I’d certainly do it again if the right opportunity came along”.

Since then, Brown has been busy performing solo, as well as with various configurations of David Scot Brown and the Elegant Reunion Band, in Bistros, Brasseries, Village Halls and Music Clubs around the Dordogne region of south-west France. “I’m kind of old school”, he says, “I believe music is really about communicating with people, so it needs to be shared in an environment conducive to that experience. I try my very best to make it worthwhile for folks to come out, to touch them in some way and have some fun together."

Having amassed a wealth of new material, he returned to the studio in September of 2018 to begin recording a full-length album titled “The Road”. “I’m really excited about recording these new songs” says Brown. “I’ve had a chance to play them in a few different ways over the past couple of years and the response has always been great, so if they’ve stood up to repeated performances, for audiences and for me, it’s time to get them recorded”.

Brown went through the new material with co-producer/engineer and Billboard chart veteran Martin Lascelles deciding which songs to include on the record. “We also decided fairly early to let the songs stand for themselves, with arrangements that would give each song its own character” says Brown. “I’m a songwriter first and foremost, so I’m not really trying to fit into any specific genre - there are so many influences. In the end, it’s really about what feels right for the songs.” Brown’s lyrics cover timeless themes and unique observations about some of the harsher realities of our modern times with compassion, optimism and small dash of humour.

Joining Brown on “The Road” are Lascelles, handling keyboards, bass and percussion duties; French guitarist Adrien Camaret; German mandolinist Wolfgang Scheel and English singers Francesca Snell and Yona Dunsford on background vocals. Look for “The Road” to be released in December 2018.

Borrowing a term from a 2017 article in the Sud Ouest newspaper about an upcoming appearance, Brown seems to be spreading his unique brand of “Ambiance musicale canadienne” – one song, one concert and one record at a time.

What Audiences Say About David Scot Brown:

“We thoroughly enjoyed the songs; we had no idea that this calibre of music was available around here”

“The interaction between you and the audience gets better every time. The new songs and change in tempo of some older ones are great. “

“Just excellent, we had a wonderful evening”

Très bonne prestation, très bon chant et très bonne musique Bravo encore!

“Simply great story-telling”

“Last evening was most enjoyable and we much appreciated the quality of the band, music and songs. Also the background stories which gave more meaning to the lyrics. We shall try and rustle up a gang for the next show.”

“Refreshingly original songs!”

“We love your music, your relaxed and friendly manner as front man and the way you talk us through the inspiration for each song.  You are clearly a romantic, but also perceptive and with an enviable skill to convert what you see and feel into fantastic songs.”

“We really enjoyed ourselves; thank you so much!”

“I just love your new songs. I find myself just singing along and think wow, I already know the words. I can’t wait for your new CD!”

“C'était un grand plaisir de t'entendre jouer, les morceaux sont variés et même si je ne comprends pas tout, les sentiments exprimés par les chansons sont universels. Le groupe est en harmonie, c'était super!”

“Thanks to an inspiring songwriter!”

“The CD is great. Played it twice on the way home.  Like the tracks with the harmonies, looking forward to the next one.”

“We look forward to more great music in the year ahead and joining you whenever we can.”

“Excellent, as usual; wonderful music”

“Le concert de vendredi dernier était super! Félicitation à David et ses amis. C'est avec plaisir que nous assisterons à ses prochains concerts! Tenez-nous informé des prochaines dates.”

A New Jess Wayne Review - Somehow Overlooked from 3 Years Ago

Just found this from the "Miews". I think it says some interesting things, particularly about ageism in music and the treatment of older singer songwriters. I think my feelings were hurt when he or she only gave a "6" on Vocals... but as I read on, not so bad in context. :) JESS WAYNE – RIDE THE RIVER (MUSIC REVIEW)RATING: 7.5 / 10Genre: Rock, Blues, AmericanaSongwriting: 8.5 | Music: 8 | Vocals: 6Location: Glendale, CAWebsite: www.jesswayne.comFor fans…See More
