HOOSE NEWS 1
- and wishing you a very Happy Spring from Mackenzie House. I thought it was time for an update on the latest happenings.
After the Paul Barrere and Fred Tackett special (!!) here in November and the New Year show from Michael Weston King and his wife Lou Dalgleish we then had a great night with Kit Clark (of Danny Wilson & Swiss Family Orbison fame) in February. Amazingly, it was Kit’s first solo gig with new songs on his keyboard and though claiming nervousness, we assured him he was amongst friends. We were treated to a great set including a fabulous voice only rendition of that Danny favourite, Mary’s Prayer. One of my top five gigs ever was seeing Danny Wilson in the then Jings in Dingwall. If you were there you’ll know what I mean.
There was still a lot of snow about and the following day we went walking up around Loch Kinellan and the views to the Ben which is always seductive to our visitors memory banks and I’m sure encourages return visits.
Rob - Medicine Music man - has been really busy organising the Strathpeffer Coffee Shop sessions with some great shows, usually on a Monday night. Sarah MacDougall last week. Rob, along with local singer/songwriters Emma Shearer & Matt Sillars, has also been hosting an Open Mic night every fortnight in the Coffee Shop on a Thursday for a few months now. The word is out and there has been a wide variety of local musicians performing, sometimes with feature guests from further afield like Johnny Fats and Isaac from Dunnet Head, or Viper Central, a brilliant young Canadian Bluegrass band. They had been chatting with Rob through the House Concert Hub website since last year and hey presto a few gigs in the Highlands.
But to business….
We are really looking forward to hosting another Great Night In with Daddy - a super Nashville duo - Will Kimbrough and Tommy Womack. (Some of you may recall Tommy’s fiery set at Bella’s Grass Roots stage last year.)
‘Drawing on juke-joint blues, swampy-groove country and a lot of rock and roll, with stops in gospel and beat-poet territory along the way, DADDY (Will Kimbrough & Tommy Womack) has been hailed by critics and fans alike for their incendiary live performances and recordings that embrace a wide scope of what's great about American music. Together, Kimbrough and Womack just click. Kimbrough’s wide-ranging abilities, sweet and reckless by turns, dovetails with Womack’s slash-and-burn style….’
